You have probably had the thought at 1 a.m. with a job board still open on your laptop: I picked the wrong thing. The machines are going to get here before I do.

That fear is not irrational. It is just aimed at the wrong target. The evidence from the last two years does not show a labor market that is shrinking. It shows a labor market that split into two lanes — one where AI makes a person more valuable, and one where AI makes a person redundant. The gap between those lanes is now the single largest variable in what a new graduate earns.

This is good news, even though it does not feel like it. A shrinking market is something you survive. A splitting market is something you steer inside of. What follows is how to read which lane a role, a major, or an internship is on — and the specific moves that put you in the lane that pays.

Start with the number that reframes everything. PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer found that workers with AI skills earn a **62% wage premium** over workers without them, up from 57% the year before. That premium is not evenly distributed: PwC reports it runs as high as 118% in sectors like consumer markets and around 16% in government and public sector work.

The demand side moved just as hard. PwC found that jobs requiring specific AI skills grew 69% while the overall jobs market grew 9% — roughly eight times faster. The Bipartisan Policy Center's Skills Data Dashboard, built on Lightcast job-posting data, put the same trend at +144% national growth in postings requiring AI skills as of May 2026, against +7% growth in overall postings.

But the more useful finding is the split itself. PwC divides roles into two categories. "Professionalised" roles are ones where AI absorbs the routine work and leaves humans doing the judgment-heavy part. "Democratised" roles are ones where AI absorbs the expert work and leaves humans doing the basic part. Professionalised roles grew 39% between 2018 and 2025. Democratised roles grew 17%. Salaries in professionalised roles have grown 37% since 2021 versus 26% for democratised — what PwC describes as 42% faster salary growth.

Call them what they are: the amplify lane and the replace lane.

Here is the part nobody tells students. The replace lane is bigger. PwC classified 52% of advertised jobs as democratised and 22% as professionalised. If you drift, you drift into the larger lane. Getting into the amplify lane is an act of deliberate positioning, not a default.

You do not need an economist to classify a job posting. You need four questions. Run any role, internship, or major through them.

**1. When AI does this job's routine tasks, what is left for the human — more judgment, or less?**

This is the whole test in one line. Stanford Digital Economy Lab researchers Erik Brynjolfsson, Bharat Chandar, and Ruyu Chen found in "Canaries in the Coal Mine?" that employment declines concentrated specifically in occupations where AI is more likely to automate rather than augment human labor. Same technology, opposite outcomes, determined by what the leftover work looks like.

**2. Does the role own a decision, or does it produce an output?**

Producing an output — a summary, a formatted deck, a scheduled meeting, a cleaned dataset — is the most automatable layer of white-collar work. Owning a decision, and being accountable for it, is not.

**3. Does the work require being physically or relationally present with a human who is not your coworker?**

PwC found that new tasks appearing in high-AI-exposure roles emphasize empathy, creativity, and face-to-face presence at 2.5 times the rate of low-exposure roles. Presence is becoming a premium input, not a soft extra.

**4. Is the role's core skill set changing fast, and is that a feature or a threat to the people in it?**

PwC found skills demand in professionalised roles grew 68% versus 33% in democratised roles, and that professionalised roles demand additional skills at twice the rate. Rapid skill churn is uncomfortable, but it is a signal you are in a lane where human capability still compounds.

PwC's own examples make the split concrete: software developers, environmental engineers, and air traffic controllers land on the professionalised side. Accounting clerks, medical secretaries, and contact-center information clerks land on the democratised side. Notice that the dividing line is not prestige or pay grade. It is whether the human is left holding judgment.

This is where students get hurt, and it deserves a section of its own.

The Stanford team found that early-career workers ages 22 to 25 in the most AI-exposed occupations experienced a 16% relative decline in employment. Critically, they found the adjustment happened through employment levels rather than wages — meaning the market did not quietly pay young workers less, it hired fewer of them. Brynjolfsson's framing is worth memorizing: AI absorbs tasks before it absorbs jobs, and junior workers hold the most absorbable tasks.

Reporting from Fortune in June 2026 on the Lab's Canaries dashboard, which tracks roughly 4.6 million workers across 730-plus occupations, showed the pattern persisting. As of April 2026, workers 22 to 25 in high AI-exposure roles were down 3.8% year over year, while the same age group in low-exposure roles grew about 2%. Workers aged 35 to 40 in those same high-exposure roles grew about 2%. The pain is concentrated at the entry point, not across the workforce.

But the entry level did not disappear. It bifurcated. PwC found that entry-level roles most exposed to AI are seven times more likely to require traditionally senior human-intensive skills — leadership, creativity, face-to-face interaction. And openings for those seniorised entry-level roles grew 35% since 2019, while other entry-level roles shrank 10%.

Read those two numbers together, because they are the thesis of your next twelve months. There is an entry-level job market growing at 35%. It is asking you for things that used to be asked of a 30-year-old. Most students respond to that by feeling disqualified. The correct response is to notice that the bar is specific — leadership, judgment, communication, presence — and specific bars can be cleared on purpose.

Meanwhile the broader new-grad market is not collapsing. NACE's 2026 Job Outlook Spring Update, fielded February 12 to March 17, 2026, projects employers will hire 5.6% more new college graduates from the Class of 2026, a meaningful reversal from the -2.4% median projection in fall 2025. Employers with 5,000 or more employees projected an 8.7% increase. NACE also reported intern hiring up nearly 4%, with a 63.1% intern-to-full-time conversion rate.

The market has room. It is just sorting people harder.

Students ask me constantly whether their major is safe. It is the wrong unit of analysis. Lanes are assigned at the task level, not the degree level, which is why two people with identical majors end up on opposite sides.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2024 to 2034 Employment Projections show total employment growing 3.1% over the decade, down sharply from 13.0% in the prior decade, to about 175.2 million jobs. Inside that slow aggregate, the spread is enormous: computer and mathematical occupations are projected to grow 10.1%, more than three times the overall rate, and healthcare support occupations 12.4%. BLS explicitly attributes projected declines in office and administrative support to automated systems including AI, and declines in sales occupations partly to AI systems used in sales activities.

Now notice something. "Office and administrative support" is a task category, not a major. Plenty of business, communications, and psychology graduates take jobs that live inside it. Plenty of others take jobs where the same degree is doing judgment work.

The AI premium also left the tech sector. The Bipartisan Policy Center's July 2026 industry breakdown found the fastest year-over-year growth in AI skill demand in employment placement agencies (69%), offices of certified public accountants (55%), software publishers (54%), commercial banking (51%), and management consulting (41%). Its conclusion: demand for AI skills is no longer concentrated in the technology industry, and professional services now see similar or faster growth.

You do not have to switch to computer science. You have to switch which tasks you are visibly good at inside the field you already chose.

Positioning is not vibes. It shows up in three specific artifacts: the roles you accept, the lines on your resume, and the sentences you say in interviews. Here is the difference, concretely.

**The internship choice.**

Weak (replace lane): An internship where your described duties are "assist with data entry, maintain spreadsheets, support scheduling, and format reports." Every verb there is a task AI now performs at a cost near zero.

Strong (amplify lane): An internship where your described duties are "run weekly analysis for the regional manager, present findings to the team, and recommend adjustments." The title may be identical. The lane is not.

If the strong version is not on offer, take the weak one and expand it. Ask for the recommendation, not just the report. Nobody stops an intern from adding judgment.

**The resume line.**

Weak: "Used AI tools to improve efficiency in marketing tasks."

Strong: "Built a prompt workflow that cut weekly campaign reporting from six hours to ninety minutes, then used the recovered time to run three A/B tests that lifted email open rate from 18% to 26%."

The weak version claims a tool. The strong version proves a decision, a measurable delta, and what you did with the time AI gave back. That second half is the amplify lane in a single clause.

**The interview answer to "How do you use AI?"**

Weak: "I use ChatGPT a lot for research and writing. It saves me a ton of time."

Strong: "I use it for first drafts and structure, and I have learned where it is unreliable. On my capstone it produced a competitor analysis with two companies that did not exist, so now I verify every factual claim against a primary source before it goes anywhere. My rule is that AI writes the draft and I own the accuracy."

The weak answer says I am a user. The strong answer says I am the quality control layer, which is exactly the human function that survives, and the one employers are paying the premium for.

Notice what the strong versions have in common. None of them require you to be technical. They require you to demonstrate that you evaluated the output rather than shipped it. LinkedIn's 2026 Skills on the Rise analysis, reported by CIO Dive, listed AI engineering, operational efficiency, and AI business strategy as the fastest-growing skills, and found postings requiring AI literacy grew more than 70% year over year. Two of those three are business judgment skills, not engineering ones.

You cannot re-major in 90 days. You can change what your evidence looks like. Here is the sequence I would run.

**Days 1 to 30: Audit and pick your judgment territory.**

- List every task you performed in your last job, internship, club role, or major project. Mark each one A (a machine could do this today) or J (this required a human judgment call).
- Count your J's. If you have fewer than three, that is your actual problem, not the market.
- Pick one domain where you will become the person with an opinion: a specific industry, a specific function, a specific type of decision. Depth beats breadth here, because judgment is domain-specific.
- Learn the AI tools your target function actually uses on the job, not the generic ones. In finance that is different from marketing, which is different from operations.

**Days 31 to 60: Manufacture evidence.**

- Build one project where AI did the grunt work and you made a call the AI could not: which market to enter, which vendor to pick, which segment to cut, which risk to flag.
- Write down the delta. Hours saved, accuracy gained, revenue modeled, error caught. Numbers are what convert a story into a resume line.
- Document one instance where the AI was wrong and you caught it. This is the single most under-used credential a student can carry into 2026 interviews.
- Get in a room with humans. PwC found high-AI-exposure roles are adding tasks requiring empathy and face-to-face presence at 2.5 times the rate of low-exposure roles. Presentations, client-facing volunteer work, and cross-team projects are all evidence.

**Days 61 to 90: Rewrite your positioning and test it.**

- Rewrite every resume bullet in the form: tool or method, then decision I owned, then measurable outcome.
- Rewrite your LinkedIn headline to name a judgment territory, not a status. "Marketing student" is a status. "Early-career marketer focused on AI-assisted campaign analytics" is a territory.
- Run five informational conversations with people two to four years ahead of you in your target function. Ask one question: what part of your job did AI take, and what part got harder? Their answer is a free lane map.
- Apply to ten roles and track which language gets responses. Positioning is testable.

One thing to keep in mind throughout: the first reader of your application is not a person. Resume.org's August 2025 survey of 1,399 U.S. workers in management-level roles with hiring knowledge found 57% of companies use AI in hiring, 79% for resume reviews and 66% for candidate assessments. Thirty-five percent reject candidates based solely on an AI recommendation, and 34% use AI to conduct interviews. Resume.org also found 74% of those companies plan to increase AI use in hiring over the next twelve months, while 57% worried AI screens out qualified candidates.

That last stat is not a reason to despair. It is a reason to write clearly, use the exact skill language in the posting, and put your measurable outcomes in the top third of the page, where both the model and the human are looking.

Knowing the lanes exist is the first half. Knowing which one fits how you actually operate is the second.

The AI Wage Premium: Why Some Graduates Earn 62% More

For a long time, the human layer of your work was a bonus. You got hired for what you could produce — the model, the deck, the code, the copy — and the way you handled people and ambiguity was the thing your manager mentioned in your review as a nice extra.

That order has flipped. PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, built on more than one billion job ads across 27 countries, found that the entry-level roles most exposed to AI are now **seven times more likely** to demand traditionally senior-level human skills than the least-exposed roles. In those high-exposure roles, 52% of newly demanded skills are ones that used to belong to senior people — strategic decision-making, stakeholder management, team building — compared with just 7% in low-exposure entry-level jobs. PwC's Global Workforce Leader Pete Brown put it plainly: AI is removing some of the routine work that once acted as an apprenticeship, while increasing demand for judgment, leadership and adaptability much earlier in careers.

Here is the catch, and it is the entire point of this article. Every candidate now claims these things. Every resume says "strong communicator," "adaptable," "problem-solver." The claim is free, which means the claim is worthless. What separates you is proof: one specific story, with a real situation, a decision you personally made, and an outcome you can name. That is it. That is the whole game.

Let's go skill by skill — what each one actually is, why AI can't do it, what proof looks like on paper, and what to do in the room.

Retire it. "Soft" implies optional, decorative, secondary to the real work. But the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 ranks analytical thinking as the top core skill for 2025, cited by seven in ten employers, with resilience, flexibility and agility second at 67%, and leadership and social influence rising 22 percentage points since 2023.

Those are not garnish. Call them human skills, durable skills, or just skills — what matters is that you stop treating them as the part of your resume you fill in after the "real" bullets are done.

**What it actually is:** Making a defensible call when the information is incomplete, the options are all imperfect, and someone has to decide now. Not analysis — analysis is the easy part. Judgment is choosing, accepting the tradeoff, and owning what happens next.

**Why AI can't do it:** A model can generate every option and score them against criteria you supply. It cannot tell you which criteria matter more when they conflict, because that requires knowing what your organization actually values, what your manager is quietly worried about, and what you are willing to be wrong about. Harvard Business Review's March 2026 analysis of nearly all U.S. job postings from 2019 through March 2025 found routine, automation-prone roles declined 13% after ChatGPT launched, while analytical, technical, and creative roles grew 20%. The market is buying the choosing, not the listing.

**What proof looks like:**

Weak: Analyzed data to support decision-making for a student organization.

Strong: With two weeks left and a $400 budget shortfall, chose to cut the venue upgrade instead of the catering after surveying 60 past attendees on what they valued; event drew 145 people, our highest turnout in three years.

The strong version has a constraint (two weeks, $400 short), a real fork in the road, the basis for the call (60 responses), and a number at the end. You could not have written that bullet without actually having made the decision.

**How to show it in the room:** Spend real time on the alternative you rejected and why. Most candidates describe what they did; almost nobody describes what they chose not to do. Say it out loud: "The other option was X, and I passed on it because Y." Then add what you would do differently now. That is not weakness — it is the sound of someone who reflects on decisions, which is the only way judgment improves.

**What it actually is:** Moving information into another person's head so that they can act on it. Not writing well — compressing well. Knowing what your audience already knows, what they need, and what they will do next.

**Why AI can't do it:** AI drafts beautifully and reads the room not at all. It does not know your director skims on her phone between meetings, that the finance lead needs the number before the narrative, or that the room has already heard this pitch twice. A Resume Genius survey of 1,500 U.S. hiring managers, reported by Forbes in July 2026, found 86% believe AI has made it harder to verify whether application materials genuinely reflect a candidate's ability — so they are compensating with live problem-solving, case discussions, and work samples. Polished prose is now cheap. Being clear in real time is not.

The demand is unambiguous: NACE's Job Outlook 2026 Spring Update, fielded with 185 employers in early 2026, puts effective communication in the top three skills employers want to see on a college student's resume, alongside teamwork and problem-solving.

**What proof looks like:**

Weak: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Strong: Rewrote the volunteer onboarding packet from 11 pages to a 2-page checklist after new volunteers kept missing setup steps; no-show rate at events dropped from roughly 1 in 3 to 1 in 10 over the spring semester.

The strong version proves communication by pointing at behavior that changed. That is the tell. Communication that did not change anyone's behavior was not communication — it was output.

**How to show it in the room:** Answer the question they asked, in about 90 seconds, then stop talking. Rambling is the most common way strong candidates lose communication points, and it happens because silence feels like failure. It is not. Lead with your conclusion, then support it. And when they ask something technical, explain it once at expert level and once the way you would explain it to a friend outside your major. Interviewers are listening for whether you can translate, because translating is most of the job.

**What it actually is:** Noticing what someone has not said. Sensing that a teammate has checked out, that a client's "sounds good" means "I have concerns I am not raising," that the quiet person in the group has the objection everyone should hear. Then doing something useful about it.

**Why AI can't do it:** Trust is built through accumulated, verifiable behavior between specific people over time. A model can simulate warmth; it cannot be the person whose word held up when it was inconvenient. The WEF's 2025 skills ranking places empathy and active listening inside the global top ten core skills, and PwC found that tasks being added to AI-exposed roles lean on human-intensive skills like empathy and judgment 2.5 times faster than tasks in the least-exposed roles.

**What proof looks like:**

Weak: Collaborated effectively with diverse teams.

Strong: Noticed one teammate had stopped submitting work two weeks before our capstone deadline; asked him directly in private, learned he had taken on a second job, and restructured the split so he owned the analysis he could do at night. We delivered on time and he presented that section himself.

Trim that for the page and tell it in full out loud. What makes it proof is the private conversation. Anyone can claim to be a team player; only someone who did it knows the fix started with noticing, then asking, then restructuring rather than reporting.

**How to show it in the room:** Trust-building is one of the few skills you demonstrate live rather than describe. Ask one genuine question about the team you would be joining — how they handle disagreement, what makes someone struggle in the role — then listen and respond to the answer instead of moving to your next prepared question. And when you talk about conflict, never make the other person the villain. Describe what they wanted, why it was reasonable from where they sat, and how you got to something workable. Interviewers read generosity toward an absent third party as a very reliable signal.

**What it actually is:** How fast you go from "I have never done this" to "I have shipped this." Not being comfortable with change — being fast in it. The measurable version of adaptability is your ramp time.

**Why AI can't do it:** AI can teach you almost anything, which is exactly why the scarce resource is the person who actually learns. And the pace is real: PwC found skills in the most AI-exposed occupations changing roughly twice as fast as in the least-exposed ones, with that gap widening 75% year over year. The WEF projects that 39% of workers' core skills will change by 2030. NACE's spring data shows the same churn at the entry point: demand for AI skills in entry-level postings nearly tripled since fall 2025, reaching 13.3% of postings. Nobody is hiring you for the stack you know today.

**What proof looks like:**

Weak: Quick learner, adaptable to new environments and technologies.

Strong: Taught myself enough SQL in three weeks — 20 hours total, using free coursework and our team's existing queries — to take over the weekly membership report, cutting the turnaround from two days to two hours.

Put a clock on it. Speed claims without time units are just adjectives. And name what you learned it **for** — learning with a deliverable attached proves you can absorb something under pressure to produce.

**How to show it in the room:** Have one crisp answer ready for "tell me about something you learned recently." Not a course you enrolled in — something you used. Four beats: what I did not know, how I got up to speed, what I built with it, how long it took. Then, when they mention a tool you have never touched, resist the urge to bluff. Say "I haven't used that — I've used the equivalent in X, and here's how I'd get productive in it." Honesty plus a plan reads as senior. Bluffing reads as a risk.

**What it actually is:** Treating the outcome as yours whether or not the failure was your fault, and knowing when to stop and say "we shouldn't do this" or "this number is wrong." Ownership is what you do when nobody assigned it to you. Ethical judgment is what you do when the easy path is available and unmonitored.

**Why AI can't do it:** Accountability requires a party who can be held accountable. A model can flag a policy conflict; it cannot absorb a consequence, apologize to a client, or stake its standing on a call. As AI does more of the producing, the value of a human who will vouch for the output goes up. That is why the capabilities employers highlighted in the discussion around LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise 2026 cluster around judgment, communication, and ethical reasoning rather than tool proficiency alone.

**What proof looks like:**

Weak: Detail-oriented and highly responsible team member.

Strong: Caught a double-counting error in our fundraising totals the morning of the report; flagged it to our advisor before it went out, rebuilt the tracker with a validation check, and the corrected figure held through the audit.

Or the harder, better version — a real mistake: Sent a member email with the wrong event date to 300 people. Sent the correction within the hour, called the 12 who had already replied, and built a two-person review step that we still use.

Own-the-mistake stories are unfakeable. Nobody invents a story where they look bad and then explains the system they built so it would not happen again.

**How to show it in the room:** Prepare an honest answer to "tell me about a time you failed." The bad answer is a humblebrag ("I care too much about quality"). The good answer has three parts: what went wrong, what you did in the next 24 hours, and what changed permanently because of it. Spend the most time on part three. And if they ask an ethics question, do not give the heroic answer instantly — say who you would tell, in what order, and how fast. Judgment shows up in the sequence, not the sentiment.

Most students reading this are now thinking: great, but I do not have any of those stories. You almost certainly do — you are just looking only at internships, and stories do not live there exclusively.

NACE's spring data shows employers value experience broadly: nearly all value U.S. internships, more than 75% value co-ops, and more than 40% actively look for on-campus employment or apprenticeship experience. NACE President Shawn VanDerziel's guidance to students is blunt — employers want to see examples, and those examples can come from academic, experiential, extracurricular, and work settings alike.

Here is where to dig. Give each one ten minutes and a blank page.

- **Part-time and service jobs.** Retail, food service, campus jobs, warehouse work. These are judgment factories — a dozen calls a shift with incomplete information and an unhappy person in front of you. Ask: what is the worst hour I ever worked, and what did I do?
- **Group projects.** Not what the group produced — what you did when the group stalled. Someone disappeared. The scope was wrong. Two people wanted different directions. Whatever you did to unstick it is the proof.
- **Campus organizations.** Skip the title and find the transition. Every org has a moment where something almost did not happen: an event nobody registered for, a budget that got cut, an officer who quit mid-semester. Being in the room for that is worth more than the line "Vice President."
- **Family responsibilities.** Translating for a parent, managing a household budget, coordinating care for a relative, working while carrying a full course load. That is stakeholder management, resource allocation, and communication under pressure. Describe the function, not the family detail — "coordinated schedules and paperwork across three parties on a fixed budget" is a professional sentence.
- **Sports, performance, and competitive teams.** Coachability is adaptability with a stopwatch on it. The story is not the season record — it is the specific correction you got, what you changed, and how fast the change showed up.

Now run every candidate story through four questions. What was the constraint — time, money, people, information? What did I personally decide or do, not "we" but you? What changed because of it? Can I attach a number, even an honest estimate? If a story survives all four, it is proof. Five of those, one per skill, and you have a resume and an interview.

Write them down before you need them — not polished bullets, just the raw facts, this week, while you still remember the numbers. The biggest reason strong students give weak interviews is that they are reconstructing their own lives on the spot.

The 5 Human Skills AI Can't Replace — and How to Prove You Have Them

You sent the same resume to 200 postings. You got four rejections, one automated "we've moved forward with other candidates," and 195 silences. Somewhere around application 60, you stopped reading the job descriptions at all.

The advice you got afterward was useless in both directions. One camp says tailor every resume from scratch, which nobody has time for when a single application already takes twenty minutes of typing your work history into a form. The other camp says volume is the game, just fire off more. So you are stuck choosing between a generic document that fits nothing and a rewriting habit you will abandon by Thursday.

That is a false choice. Tailoring is not rewriting. Tailoring is a short, bounded edit pass on a resume you already built well — swapping a positioning line, re-ranking six bullets, adjusting a skills block. It takes fifteen minutes because the hard work happened once, in advance. This post is the system: what to build first, then exactly what to do in each of those fifteen minutes.

Before you optimize for a machine, you should know what the machine does. A lot of popular resume advice is built on a statistic that was never real.

You have probably heard that 75% of resumes are rejected by an applicant tracking system before a human ever sees them. The Interview Guys traced that claim to a 2012 sales pitch from a company called Preptel that went out of business in 2013, with no published methodology behind it. It got repeated until it became folklore. Jobscan, which builds ATS optimization tools and has every commercial reason to say otherwise, states it plainly: an ATS rarely rejects a candidate automatically.

Here is the more accurate picture. Jobscan reports that 98.4% of Fortune 500 companies use an ATS, 492 of 500, but the system's main job is parsing, indexing, and search. A recruiter runs a query against the pile, sometimes literal Boolean logic. Rejections that do happen automatically come from knockout questions a human configured: work authorization, minimum degree, location. The software is not judging your verbs. It is answering the recruiter's search.

That does not mean filtering is harmless. That is your target list. Usually eight to twelve terms. Do not collect thirty, or you will dilute everything.

One judgment call while you are here: if you hit the posting and can only honestly map two or three items, close it. This system is for postings you are a plausible fit for. Spending fifteen minutes on a role requiring five years of experience you do not have is the same wasted motion as sending 200 generic resumes, just slower.

The top third of page one does most of the work. Weak: Worked at the campus front desk answering student questions.

Nothing was invented in either rewrite. The scope, the action, and the outcome were always there. What changed is that the words a recruiter is searching for now appear in a sentence that proves you did the thing.

That is the ethical line, and it is a bright one. Use the posting's vocabulary to describe work you genuinely did. Never use it to describe work you did not.

**Minutes 12 and 13: the skills block.** This is the cheapest, fastest alignment you can make. Reorder it so the tools named in the posting appear first, and add any legitimate item from your master keyword list that the posting asked for and you left out. Delete anything irrelevant to this role. A long skills list reads as unfocused, and Ladders found the worst-performing resumes shared cluttered layouts and keyword stuffing.

Match their phrasing. If the posting says "Microsoft Excel," do not write "MS Office Suite." If they say "data visualization" and you wrote "Tableau," write "Data Visualization (Tableau)" and cover both.

**Minute 14: the details.** Check the education line. If the posting names a specific coursework area and you took it, list two or three relevant courses. Check that your positioning line's job title matches the posting exactly. Remove anything that is now stale. Confirm you are still on one page.

Then name the file properly: Firstname-Lastname-Marketing-Analyst-Resume.pdf. A recruiter downloading forty files sees the filename before the document. Make it say who you are and what you are applying for.

**Minute 15: read the top third aloud.** Out loud, not in your head. If the positioning line and your first two bullets do not sound like a person who has done this specific job, you have missed. Fix the one sentence that sounds most generic and submit.
